Touch-screen devices are convenient, but sometimes you may prefer using your computer without one. Whether to save battery, avoid accidental touches, or switch to a more traditional setup, knowing how to turn off the touch screen can be very useful. This guide explains step-by-step methods to disable touch functionality on Windows laptops, Chromebooks, and other devices.
Avoid unintentional tapping when typing.
Boost battery life and performance.
Uninterrupted use of external peripherals such as a keyboard or mouse.
Temporarily fix touch screen problems.
On Windows 10 or 11, take these actions:
After pressing Windows + X, choose Device Manager.
Find Devices for Human Interfaces
Turn off the device.
Right-click on it and choose Disable.
When asked, confirm.
To re-enable it, repeat the steps and choose Enable device.
Press Search + Shift + T
.
This toggles the touch screen on and off instantly.
If it doesn’t work, you may need to enable debugging shortcuts in Chrome Flags before using the command.
MacBooks: Apple laptops don’t have touch screens, so no need to disable.
2-in-1 Tablets (e.g., Surface Pro): Use Device Manager as in Windows laptops.
Android Phones/Tablets: Touch screen can’t be fully disabled, but apps exist to lock the screen temporarily.
Turning off the touch screen will make your device a mouse and keyboard only.
Make sure you have an alternative input device connected.
If you’re disabling it for kids, consider screen lock apps instead.
