On August 6, 2025, a Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9EH military helicopter crashed in the Adansi (Akrofuom) District of the Ashanti Region while en route to Obuasi for an event to combat illegal mining (“galamsey”), Wikipedia NewsCitiNewsroom.com. All eight people on board perished.

The crash was immediately declared a “national tragedy” by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, with flags at half-mast and a three-day national mourning period declared by President John Mahama, WikipediaBlack Star News, and El País. The helicopter disappeared from radar shortly after departing Accra around 9:12 AM, Graphic Online, Jazeera.
The flight recorder (“black box”) was recovered the following day to aid ongoing investigations, Wikipedia.
Remains were transported to Accra, with DNA samples sent to South Africa for identification. Burial preparations were deferred while identification was finalized on Wikipedia.
